March 2023 – Street Photography
Judge: Steve Goldsmith
Thank you for letting me be your judge for this competition. Many people try to impose rules on what makes a good photograph in any specific sector, but rules are made for breaking. The results are personal interpretation and although a photograph may not have a wide appeal it is still special and has a meaning for the photographer.
In a guide I sent out prior to the competition I said the official definition for Street Photography was ‘everyday life in public places’ and what I looked for in Street Photography was a ‘single picture telling a story’. So I have applied these two statements to each of the photographs in the competition, and given my judgement accordingly. There are only 21 photographs to judge but the quality is very high with many worth a special mention for some element, so to select a 1stn 2nd and 3rd has been very hard and I think it fair to say there are many worth winners.
It in no way means that my opinion is the only, and correct opinion, it simply is meant to be constructive which I hope is the way you accept it.
